On November 13, 1924, the residents of the Mix
District met at the home of Leonard Dorman to discuss the formation of a volunteer company for mutual fire protection. One
week later, November 20th 1924, in the home of William Morse on Shepard ave the Mix District Volunteer Fire Company was actually
formed, with Frederick Kirk as its first President and Diwght Kirk as its first Captain.
One of the first problems to be faced by this
new organization was that of suitable quaters and in the fall of 1925 a subscription paper was started to raise money for
this purpose. The response from the citizens of the district and their friends was ver gratifying and in 1927 the Town Engineers
laid out the lines for the new building on land donated by President Kirk on Shepads Ave.
Work progressed rapidly and on April 12, 1928
with an approptiate ceremony attended by practically every member of the community together with prominent citizens from all
parts of Hamden, the present quaters of the company was dedicated.
The town of Hamden in co-operation with this
company allotted them the chemical engine which was originally stationed at Highwood. Equipped with the necessary accessories
for fighting grass and forest fires this company occupies an important place in the Hamden Fire Department taking care of
many jobs which otherwise would necessitate driving the heavier pumping engines over rough country roads and leaving the more
settled area which it is their duty to serve unprotected.
About fourty volunteers make up the personel
of this company and their record is a very worthy one.
The value of this company and its fine quaters as an
asset to the social life of the rural community which it serves is in itself important.
